Homage Headed to the Tremé
Homage Hospitality Group, an Oakland, CA-based developer of boutique homes and hotels, is headed south to New Orleans, LA following our acquisition of a 10-room property located in the historic Tremé-Lafitte neighborhood.
We’re calling the property The Freeman, as a subtle nod to the legacy of the Tremé. The neighborhood is formally recognized as America’s oldest existing African American community and the birthplace of the jazz music genre. As a symbol of liberation through ownership, we’re excited to welcome travelers from around the world to a special experience in the Tremé that honors its story in uniquely modern ways.
We’ll help redefine the alternative accommodations market in New Orleans, where modern BnBs and vacation rentals are sprouting up across the city. Those offerings typically don’t have a heartbeat, and their operators typically host guests with no regard for the surrounding community. We’re taking a different approach, opening properties that tell stories and helping our guests better understand what’s around them.
The Freeman will play host to New Orleans visitors starting in summer 2018. Our design direction is inspired by 1920s jazz culture alongside the colorful yet refined contemporary dwellings that define the Tremé. We’ll outfit the property with commissioned art, timeless artifacts, and vintage furniture to accent our preferred forms of ‘comfort and cozy’ throughout the units. Lush greenery will flow from the courtyard through the interior, symbolizing life and its care.
“The opportunity to launch our vertical in boutique homes in the center of the community known as the oldest for African American home ownership is beyond exciting” Homage co-founder and CEO, Damon Lawrence, said about our effort with The Freeman. “We want purpose and storytelling to be apart of every property we open. In the Tremé, we’re excited to tell a story often forgotten, one of black liberation through ownership and the positive experiences wrought from freedom. We’re on a side of New Orleans that millions of its annual visitors don’t often see, but we’ll play a part in showcasing the beauty worth witnessing firsthand, including the food at the original Dooky Chase and the history at Louis Armstrong Park.”
